Why
Shakespeare's Retreat?
Our beloved labs Mario and Shakespeare were the inspiration
for The Paw House and it brings us great joy to share them with
our guests forever. Shakespeare's Retreat is the very special
place where we celebrate the life of "Shakes" who
loved the inn, our guests, and just about everything that involves
life. Now, Shakes is 15 years old, still a happy dog, but seldom
gets to visit the Inn as his legs aren't able to carry him around
too well. It is with his timeless smile that he invites you
to enjoy his Retreat - the place he loved with all his heart. |

Why
Bad Dog? Well
when we dreamed up the names of the rooms we thought that we
would be fancy and name rooms "Good Dog and Bad Dog"
in exotic languages. But we weren't that smart because we weren't
too confident regarding the spelling words like bueno perro
or buen chein and were concerned that we might butcher the grammar
of a foriegn language. Then we saw that Steven Huneck had done
some artwork of "Good Dog" and "Bad Dog"
and we were instantly convinced. The names stuck - and we didn't
lose any points for bad grammar, etc.
As a caveat...just
to be sure the name Bad Dog certainly DOES NOT reflect their
canine tenants - all dogs are good - only the owners are sometimes
bad. |

This fantastic room greets you with a comical story titled "The
Chase," which will ring true for all dog-lovers. A row of playful
puppies border sloped ceilings that sit above wide-planked hardwood
floors and breathtaking views. Throughout the room you will
find cats, squirrels, balls, toys, and other "objects of
a dog's affection."
Sit in a
comfy chair and take in the New England countryside, a church
steeple and Killington and Pico Peaks, or walk down your own
private staircase to a roaring fire in the wood burning stove.
(In winter, of course.)
Two beautifully dressed beds make this room ideal for people
who enjoy sharing travel, but may not wish to share the same
bed.

Why
"The Chase"?
When we lived in New Jersey, we used to hike with Mario and
Shakespeare each day at Mills Reservation in Montclair. It was
here that our goofy boys would chase anything that they could
find, especially SQUIRRELS. Since then we have deeply internalized
that this was irresponsible - yes -but ,without shame, here's
the story Mitch was inspired to write:
The
Chase was on!
And who was in first?
Why it was the squirrel
Who was fearing the worst
There
were two thugs behind him
Fast on his trail
With terrible breath
And big as a whale
But
the squirrel was sly
The squirrel was deft
He'd dart to the right
Then to the left
With
no time to spare
He'd scale a big tree
With a smile on his face
He'd claim VICTORY!

Why
Rin Tin Tin?
This show was one of Jen's favorite programs when she was a
little puppy. So it became a dream come true for her to share
her childhood star with you! |

This warm, inviting, first-floor bedroom offers soft petal-pink
walls, wide-planked hardwood floors, high ceilings and peaceful
views of the backyard meadow and treed hilltops. A hand painted
dogwood tree blends into the picturesque scene of our backyard
where on some mornings you may spy bunnies, deer, or even an
occasional moose parading through the country setting. (Don't
get your hopes up too high about the moose - it is more of a
marketing gimmic than a reality - but hey you never know!) Dogwood,
like Rin Tin Tin, is also ideal for dogs who have difficulty
climbing stairs.
A queen-sized, white maple, sleigh bed with a pillow-top mattress
and snuggly duvet will carry you off to a peaceful slumber.

Why
Dogwood?
The soft pink walls immediately inspired us to think of a Dogwood
tree and we commissioned Jen's very talented cousin to paint
a mural. Along with the hummingbirds that call this tree home,
this Dogwood"grows" on us and everyone who has stayed
in this pretty space. |

This spacious, bright and cheerful room features its own privacy
porch...a perfect SPOT to enjoy the evening breezes of each
Vermont season. In the spring, summer, and fall, enjoy the
peace of the adjacent rose garden, lilac trees, and foliage.
It is too bad that we did not take any "before" pictures of
the interior of this room as it has been completely transformed
to one of the prettiest rooms in the house. Given its size
and layout, Spot! is ideal for "two dog guests" and like Dogwood
and Rin Tin Tin, is good for dogs that have difficulty climbing
stairs. This beautiful room has oak flooring and bright sunshine
throughout the day.
A darkwood country bed provides you with a beautiful view
of the Vermont sky on a clear night...
Why
"Spot"?
When we purchased the Inn in 2001 this room became the "spot"
where we put EVERYTHING! (Including us!) This room was not
available on our grand opening, but was forced into action
when we accidently overbooked the inn for Martin Luther King
weekend in 2002. (Jen was hanging the shower curtains while
the people checked in!) Since that exciting day, Spot has
become one of our most popular rooms.

Our ametuer photos cannot begin to capture the beauty and
comfort of this oversized suite. Rustic, charming, comfortable,
and cheerful, Bark Ave is the largest room in the inn featuring
its own private entrance, living room area, private fridge,
and bright, romantic bedroom. Your private porch provides
a perfect place for a quiet romantic dinner or relaxing picnic
where views extend from Paw House Park to the treeline of
our backyard.

Why
The Bark Avenue Suite?
Mitch, Jen, Mario, Shakes, Brooklyn, and Drew called this
room home until Drew cried too loud at night, woke up everybody,
stressed out his parents, and forced them to move next door!
Upon vacating, we held a contest to name the room and lo and
behold Bark Avenue tickled our New York (ie. flatlander roots)
enough to win the grand prize.
