Behind the Names “Bad Dog” and “Good Dog”
When we dreamed up the names of the rooms we thought that we would be fancy and name rooms "Good Dog and Bad Dog" in exotic languages. But we weren't that smart because we weren't too confident regarding the spelling words like buen perro or bon chien and were concerned that we might butcher the grammar of a foreign language. Then we saw that Vermonter
As a caveat...just to be sure the name Bad Dog certainly DOES NOT reflect its canine tenants - all dogs are good Steven Huneck had done some artwork of "Good Dog" and "Bad Dog" and we were instantly convinced. The names stuck - and we didn't lose any points for bad grammar, etc.- only the owners are sometimes bad. Image courtesy of Dog Mountain.

The Story Behind Naming “The Chase”
Prior to opening The Paw House we lived in Clifton, New Jersey. Each morning before heading out to work, we hiked at Mills Reservation in Montclair. It was here that our fun-loving labs would chase anything that they could find, especially SQUIRRELS. Since then we have deeply internalized that this was irresponsible - yes - but, without shame, this is the poem Mitch was inspired to write…

The Story Behind Naming “Dogwood”
When we purchased the inn, the soft pink walls immediately inspired us to think of a Dogwood tree and the name contained the word "dog" - bonus! So we commissioned Jen's very talented cousin to paint a "dogwood" mural that "grew" on us and everyone who stayed in this pretty space. But after many years, it was time for a change. We took down the tree and rebuilt the room with a fresh new look when the sitting room was added in 2021 to make this charming space among the most favorite of our guests.

The Story Behind “Spot”
When we purchased the Inn in 2001 this room became the "spot" where we put EVERYTHING! (Including us!) This room was not available on our grand opening, but was forced into action when we accidentally overbooked the inn for Martin Luther King weekend in 2002. (Jen was hanging the shower curtains while the people checked in!) It’s a shame we didn’t take any before pictures, but since that exciting day, Spot has become one of our most popular rooms.

The Story Behind “The Bark Avenue Suite”
Mitch, Jen, Mario, Shakes, Brooklyn, called this room home until our first son Drew was born in 2004, cried too loud at night, woke up everybody, stressed us all out, and forced us to move next door! Upon vacating, we held a contest to name the room… and lo and behold Bark Avenue tickled our New York (i.e. flatlander roots) enough to win the grand prize.

The Story Behind “Koko’s Kabana”
When our youngest son Kyle was eight years old, he "needed" his own puppy. So like any responsible third grader, he went online, found a rescue group and convinced them that our family would like to adopt one of their dogs. Lo and behold, the foster family drove to the inn without knowing that they were corresponding with an eight year old, and we met Koko for the first time. Needless to say, it was love at first sight and in 2015, Koko joined our pack. Fittingly, when we build our cottages in 2019, our little cutie gave us the honor of using her name for our newest digs.

The Story Behind “Brooklyn’s Bungalow”
Affectionately known in our Pack as "Bad Brooklyn" our dirt divin’ golden retriever was a forever puppy. Her theme song was Iggy Pop's Lust for Life and she embodied everything fun. Her favorite things (in no particular order) were getting into garbage, swimming in icy rivers, cross country skiing, chewing sticks, diving nose deep into mud, and loving her humans. We cherished our 16 years with our Brooklyn and are forever happy to share her bungalow with you.
