Dog Mountain - St. Johnsbury, Vermont
An ideal day trip from The Paw House Inn is the town of St. Johnsbury, Vermont and the magical destination of Stephen Huneck's Dog Mountain. A mecca for dog lovers, Dog Mountain is a one of a kind place where thousands of people celebrate the joy of canine companionship.
In addition to the dog chapel, Huneck's artwork, Dog Mountain also is a great way to spend a day hiking and swimming along the beautiful grounds. Weston, Vermont
Highlights include the dog-friendly Vermont Country Store, The Weston Playhouse and Lasser Ceramics. A road-trip to Weston combines perfectly with a visit to Manchester and/or a hike at Lyebrook Falls or Jamaica State Park
Manchester, Vermont
Highlights include The Northshire Bookstore, Pastime Pinball and Road Runner Cafe - all dog friendly! Manchester is also home to many dog-friendly shops, including Orvis, The Southern Vermont Arts Center and Mount Equinox Skyline Drive. A road trip to Manchester pairs seamlessly with a trip to Weston, and/or a hike at Lye Brook Falls or Emerald Lake State Park.
Brandon, Vermont
Highlights include strolling through downtown, the entirety of which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, visiting the Brandon Artists’ Guild, dining at dog-friendly Cafe Provence and enjoying a beer at dog-friendly Foley Brothers. A trip to Brandon is easily paired with a trip to Middlebury and/or Burlington and hikes at Branbury State Park or Moosalamoo National Recreation Area
Middlebury, Vermont
Home to Middlebury College, highlights of this historic town include strolling its iconic downtown, picking up a sandwich from Noonie’s Deli, enjoying a drink at dog-friendly Drop-In Brewing Company or Woodchuck Cider House, and taking a hike along the Robert Frost Interpretive Trail. Middlebury is located between Brandon and Burlington and is the perfect addition to a road trip to either or both.
Burlington, Vermont
Located on Lake Champlain, Burlington is a worth-while day trip. Highlights include Waterfront Park, Church Street Market Place, Lake Champlain Chocolates (best hot chocolate ever!), and the Burlington Bike Path (goes through Lake Champlain!). On the way to Burlington, you can stop in Brandon, Middlebury and/or take a hike at Mt. Philo in Charlotte for amazing views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks.
Woodstock, Vermont
Considered by many to be the quintessential Vermont town, highlights of Woodstock include strolling the historic downtown, Billings Farm and Museum,Sugarbush Maple and Cheese Farm,Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park, hiking Mt. Tomand biking Mt. Peg. On your way to or from Woodstock, be sure to stop at dog-friendly Long Trail Brewery. And if you are visiting Woodstock, you may as well travel fifteen minutes down the road and visit Quechee!
Quechee, Vermont
Quechee is a cool little town located right on the Ottauquechee River and Vermont’s ‘Little Grand Canyon’ a.k.a. Quechee Gorge. Other highlights include Simon Pearce, the Hot Air Balloon Festival,Quechee Gorgeand the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS). Visiting Quechee is easily paired with a trip to Woodstock and should not be missed!
Stowe, Vermont
While Stowe may be your ultimate destination, the ride up Route 100, one of the country’s most scenic byways, is the journey! Attractions along the way include Moss Glen Falls in Granville, Warren Falls in Warren, Ben & Jerry’s Factory, Cabot Creamery Farmer’s Shop, and Cold Hollow Cider Mill.
Once you reach Stowe, you can stretch your legs on the paved recreation path or through the downtown, visit Trapp Family Lodge, view another Moss Glen Falls, mountain bike at Cady Hill Forest, dine at Doc Ponds or Ranch Camp (both dog friendly patios), and ride the Gondola up Mt. Mansfield (dog friendly from mid-June to Mid-October)
